Shah seeks report from state BJP on poor turnout at yatra launch

Bengaluru, Nov 4: A day after the state BJP was left red-faced due to the poor turnout at the launch of its Nava Karnataka Nirmana Parivarthana Yatra, the party has started deciphering reasons for the flop show.

The party had expected three lakh workers to attend the launch of the Nava Karnataka Nirmana Parivarthana Yatra at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) but only a small percentage of that number actually turned up at the venue.

According to BJP sources, the central leadership has expressed its displeasure to the state unit for embarrassing party national president Amit Shah, who had to launch the yatra in front of scores of empty chairs.

Shah, it is learnt, has now sought a report through BJP national general secretary P Muralidhar Rao on what went wrong. Soon after he arrived at the venue on Thursday, Shah himself had taken a few leaders on the dais, including party state president B S Yeddyurappa, to task for the poor show.

Poor planning and organisation, bad choice of venue and lack of enthusiasm and involvement on the part of leaders from Bengaluru city have been assessed as the primary reasons for the poor turn out. A party functionary said BIEC was a bad choice for holding the convention. BIEC is located 15 kms from the city centre and, Palace Grounds or National College Grounds could have been more convenient venue.

The party had directed its workers to arrive at the venue on bikes. Many did arrive on bikes, but stayed on at the parking lot as they did not want to part with their vehicle for the fear that it might be stolen.

The 100 BJP corporators, 11 MLAs and three MPs from Bengaluru have also been blamed for the yatra launch debacle for not making efforts to mobilise sufficient crowd at the venue. There is a feeling in the party that the three MPs from Bengaluru, Union Ministers Ananth Kumar (Bangalore South) and D V Sadananda Gowda (Bangalore North) and P C Mohan should (Bangalore Central) have done much more in ensuring the success of the yatra launch.

The central leadership has directed the state unit to be vigilant and put in more efforts during the remaining course of the 75-day yatra.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
