Kasaragod, Nov 14: Two siblings from Karnataka’s Belgavi city were arrested in connection with the murder of a youth at Cherkala in Kasaragod district.
A team headed by Superintendent of Police K.G. Simon arrested the duo identified as Akkandappa (30) and his brother Vittal (33) for hacking to death Rangappa Gaji (27) in August.
The victim was also a native of Karnataka’s Bagalkot. His highly decomposed body was traced at an uninhabited plot adjacent to the National Highway at nearby Cherkala.
Mr. Simon told a press conference here on Monday that the investigation led by Vidyanagar Circle Inspector of Police Babu Peringeth established the identity of the deceased after verifying informations gathered from the purse spotted from the body of Rangappa, who was working as casual labourer in the locality. The interrogation of the accused revealed that the murder was a fallout of dispute over shouldering the expenses to buy liquor as the duo confessed to have committed crime under the influence of alcohol.
In an inebriated condition they thrashed Rangappa with a stone inflicting multiple injuries on the youth.
The arrest followed after quizzing around 200 labourers from other States as the investigation did not yield the desired results.
The police later intensified the probe by reconstituting the investigation team headed by the police chief as the team members, relying on vital clues, launched manhunt in parts of the State and neighbouring Karnataka and rounded up the duo from their residence at Ramdurg in Belgavi.
The duo confessed to have committed the crime following sustained interrogation by the police, Mr. Simon said.
The Superintendent of Police further disclosed that the “e-documentation” of the labourers from other States as part of the statewide drive to ensure safety of the local residents had been launched in the district.
