April 11, 2017

That takes the total of four-wheeler patrol vehicles in the city to 272. Ministers G?Parameshwara, Dinesh Gundu Rao and Roshan Baig were also present at the event at Vidhana Soudha.

“Pink Hoysalas will have at least one woman police personnel on board... but it does not mean only Pink Hoysalas will rush to women in distress,” Praveen Sood, City Police Commissioner, said at the launch. The priorities assigned to Pink Hoysalas are crimes against women, children, and elderly citizen, he said.

Police have identified ‘hot spots’ for exclusive patrols by pink Hoysalas.Schools, colleges, shrines, malls, shopping complexes, markets, garment factories, and railway and bus stations come under their surveillance.

Pink Hoysalas will also patrol tech and biotech parks and residential areas where women stay as paying guests. The initiative keeps in mind the safety of women working in shifts in the hospitality and airline industries, and other professions that call for police protection.

6,000 downloads

Not everybody can dial 100 in an emergency. The Suraksha app is an option for citizens in distress, Sood said. “Even before its launch, the app has been downloaded by at least 6,000 Bengalureans, and we expect at least 50,000 citizens to download the app in the near future," he said.

Thirty participants in a naming contest came up with the name of Suraksha. They have won IPL tickets for their participation, Sood said.

Some on Twitter wondered why the police couldn’t have chosen a name based on the Kannada word to seek help: ‘Kaapaadu.’ @JS_Prashant tagged the chief minister, the police and the Kannada Development Authority, asking if the app was available in Kannada. The interface on Suraksha is only in English.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.
