Mangaluru, Nov 20: In a bold move, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced interest-free loans for women self-help groups (SHGs) in Karnataka to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Addressing the gathering during the launch of the state-wide birth centenary celebrations of Later Indira Gandhi, at Nehru Maidan here, Siddaramaiah said a government order (GO) in this regard will be issued after the legislature session.
"At present, women SHGs are given loans with interest of 4%. On the occasion of 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, we have decided to distribute loans to women SHGs at 0% interest. Currently, we are distributing loan to the tune of Rs 3 lakh without interest to farmers in the state. Similarly, 0% interest loans will be distributed to women too," said the CM.
“We will hold discussions in this regard and prepare detailed action plan on how to distribute it soon. A circular in this direction will be issued soon after the State Legislature Session,” he added.
Recalling the contributions of Indira Gandhi, the CM said the nationalization of 14 banks during her tenure in 1969 was a revolutionary achievement that opened the doors of the banks to poor.
"Before nationalization, the doors of banks were not open for farmers and poor in the country. It was a foresighted policy of Indira Gandhi that made her a popular leader of the poor," Siddaramaiah said.
Comparing the economic policies, the chief minister opined that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not have the foresightedness that Indira Gandhi possessed. "Indira Gandhi was an accomplished woman leader, who was praised even by BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She had inherited leadership qualities from our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru," Siddaramaiah said.
