The office the Speaker of Karnataka legislative assembly has issued a notice to the seven rebel JD(S) legislators asking them to appear for the hearing in the case. The development comes after the JD(S) petitioned the Speaker’s office to fast track the disqualification petition filed against them.
While the JD(S) has sought action from the Speaker on the issue before Saturday in view of the elections to the four seats of the Rajya Sabha from the State in which the party is expecting these legislators to vote for the Congress candidate, the move by the Speaker’s office to schedule the hearing for Monday is being seen as being tactical. In the interim, the party has also urged the Speaker to prevent these seven legislators from voting in the Rajya Sabha elections.
The notice/summons issued by the Legislative Assembly Secretary on Friday stated that the arguments in the petition filed by JD(S) legislators C.N. Balakrishna and B.B. Ningaiah would continue at 11.30 a.m. on Monday and that the rebel members or their lawyers can be represent.
The notices have been issued to B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, A.B. Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, Akhanda Srinivasmurthy, S. Bheema Naik, Iqbal Ansari, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, and H.C. Balakrishna, against whom the disqualification proceedings were launched by the JD(S) after they — defying party whip — voted for the Congress candidate in the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections.
JD(S) spokesperson Ramesh Babu, MLA, said the Speaker, who has kept the issue pending for nearly two years, should pass his order on Monday itself.
Sources said that with the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 23, the notice to continue the hearing on the petition from March 19 will not give much time or relief to the JD(S), which is falling short of votes for its nominee B.M. Farookh in the elections. The party is seeing the Speaker’s move as a delay tactic. Sources said the party might approach the High Court for relief if it sees this as a delaying tactics.
