Bantwal, Nov 30: A Class X student, who ventured into Netravati river for a bath under a bridge near Panemangaluru in Bantwal taluk met watery grave on Saturday.
Sharat Kumar (15), son of Shekhar Acharya and Gulapi couple residing at Ganadpadpu in B C Road, dragged away by strong currents before the eyes of his friend Prajwal. The deceased was a student of Sri Rama Vidyakendra, Kalladka, run by RSS leader Prabhakar Bhat.
The two friends had left their home around 3:30 p.m. and reached the newly built bridge near Panemangaluru. According to sources, Sharat, who had started to learn swimming recently, ventured into the river, while Prajwal, who had no swimming skills sat on a stone.
All of a sudden the boy was caught in a whirlpool and failed to escape. A helpless Prajwal shouted for help.
A few passersby, who understood the situation, rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the boy. However, he breathed his last before being fished out by the local residents.
Jurisdictional police inspector K U Belliappa and a team of sleuth arrived and conducted spot investigation. The body was immediately sent for postmortem and later handed over to the family members.
The local residents who gathered at the spot blamed the authorities for failing to put up warning board under the bridge, where children often visit to play.
