Mumbai, April 27: A college student in Mumbai has taken his parents to court alleging that they are trying to prevent him from a sex-change operation. His father says the surgery cannot be treated as "a personal decision, and the permission of the entire family, which includes his parents and grand parents, must be taken.

21-year-old Bidhan Barua has told the Bombay High Court that his parents, who live in Guwahati, have threatened doctors at Mumbai's Saifee Hospital where he was scheduled to undergo a sex change surgery later this month. Mr Barua claims that the doctors have refused to operate upon him without clearance from the court.

In Guwahati, Bidhan's father, Supti Ranjan Barua, told NDTV, "I gave birth to a son, not a eunuch. I feel ashamed that he wants to change his sex."

Mr Barua also alleged that his son is being misguided by his friends and doctors.
