Mangaluru, May 15: “Tasheel was not the kind of person the media has portrayed him to be – he would never willingly do anything wrong or over-speed while driving,” claims relative of the 23-year-old graduate who was killed in a heart-wrenching accident that occurred when the car he was driving plunged into the river at Tannirbavi earlier this week.
The presence of a girl identified as Prineeta Suvarna–who was also killed in the accident–onboard the car along with Tasheel Ahmed, a city resident, had fuelled many suspicions. However, family members of Tasheel clarified that they were not lovers.
According to Mohammed Naeem, Tasheel’s relative and close friend, the latter had recently sold his iPhone 5S and after using a different model from the same company, wished to purchase the model he was using previously. On finding an advertisement offering the same model (iPhone 5S) for sale on a popular online classifieds in Mangaluru, he contacted the seller – who was the same girl who was killed in the accident on Tuesday, he said.
He told Coastaldigest.com that Tasheel had always been respectable and was careful not to commit mistakes, especially speeding or reckless driving on roads. It is unlikely that he was speeding on his own; it might have been possible that he began speeding while being followed by unknown persons, he said.
On the fateful day, he is presumed to have left from Jeppu in the evening to purchase the iPhone from the girl, for which they had negotiated the price earlier. “We are not clear why he went to Tannirbavi on the outskirts of the city – it is possible that the girl had asked him to collect the phone from some place nearby,” revealed Naeem, a resident of Kundroli.
He also said that Tasheel had asked one of his friends to accompany him while making the purchase, but proceeded alone since the friend was busy with work.
He claimed that the two did not have prior contact with each other, although this cannot be completely ruled out. “We are getting to hear different versions of the events leading to the accident, but in reality, there is absolutely no communal angle to this. The family members are deeply distressed by the abusive comments posted online regarding the accident and Tasheel’s intentions,” he said.
Contrary to news reports, Tasheel had completed his graduate in Business Management from St Joseph’s College located in Jeppu. He is survived by his parents, an elder sister and a younger brother.
