Bengaluru, Sep 5: A ride offered by a stranger proved costly for a techie and a couple, as two men were robbed and thrown out of the car while the miscreants fled away with the woman on a highway in Bengaluru.

The incident occurred on Friday under the limits of the Peenya police. It came to light after one of the three victims, a software engineer, lodged a complaint with the police.

The police tried to locate the car on the highway, but found no success. Now, three days since the incident, there is still no trace of the car (that had no registration number) or the woman, said to be in her mid-30s.

In his complaint, Lalith Kumar Yadav (23), a resident of south-east Bengaluru, who was kicked out of the vehicle on a desolate stretch of the highway, said that the driver of a white Maruti Swift car came up to him and offered him a ride when he was waiting for a bus at Jalahalli cross on the highway to get to Sira in Tumakuru at 3 am.

Lalith said he noticed the couple sitting in the backseat and thought it would be safe to catch the ride. He could hear the couple talking to each other and the woman growing uncomfortable with the presence of strangers in the vehicle.

The driver also overheard the conversation and asked the woman to move to the front seat, next to him, as he would pick up one more passenger who would sit at the back. The man accompanying her approved and she moved to the front seat.

After the driver picked up the new passenger on Tumakuru road, he got off the highway. When the techie asked why he was deviating from the normal route, he told him that it was a shortcut and he knew the route better than anyone in the vehicle.

After moving for around a km, the man who got into the car last took out a dagger. He and the driver threatened Lalith and the couple, warning them against making noise. He hit Lalith and took Rs 1,500 cash from his wallet. He also took his mobile but gave it back it after taking out the SIM card, and pushed him out of the car.

He told the police that the other male passenger was also thrown out of the vehicle. The driver and his accomplice fled away with the woman, even as the man started running behind the car. After that he lost track of the man. Lalith managed to reach a few policemen who alerted the control room.

The patrolling police were told about the white Swift car without a number plate. Soon the police started covering all the exit points, including tollgates. A police subinspector and his team noticed a car that matched the description and chased it for about 3 km, but the miscreants managed to escape. Deputy commissioner of police (north) TR Suresh said they were yet to establish the whereabouts of the vehicle, or if there was a woman in the car. He strongly advised people against getting into unknown vehicles.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
