Udupi, Jul 22: The Udupi district police have started a drive to promote safe driving among college students from Tuesday.
The police will not just be counselling students against speedy, rash and negligent driving, but would also summon their parents.
“We will advise parents on the problems posed by rash and negligent driving. We will also tell them to encourage their children to wear helmets in the interest of their own safety,” said Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai.
The police have asked 20 students to get their parents to the district police office. The drive saw pro-active participation from the police.
Mr. Annamalai checked the registration certificates and driving licences of students who were driving motorcycles. He advised them against fast driving and also asked them to wear helmets.
The modus operandi of the police is not to harass students. It will just check their DLs and RCs of the vehicles.
“We will take the pictures of their DLs and RCs and tell the students to send their parents to the district police office. We believe this will go a long way in creating awareness of road safety and preventing accidents,” said Mr. Annamalai.
Wearing helmets is not compulsory in Udupi. There is no notification to that effect.
