Udupi, May 9: Preparations are on for elections to 155 gram panchayats in the Udupi district on May 29.
Speaking at a preparatory meeting held in his office, Deputy Commissioner Dr R Vishal said there were 7,38,608 voters in the district, which included 3,85,418 women and 3,53,190 men. There were 367 service voters.

The total number of seats was 2,398, including 1,161 general seats and 1,237 seats reserved for women. The total number of polling stations in the district was 907, while a total of 4,989 personnel including officers would be overseeing the election work.
Of a total of 186 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, 159 were for women candidates. The total number of seats for Scheduled Tribes was 197, which included 166 seats for women.
Of the 582 seats for Backward Classes 'A', 323 seats were reserved for women. The total number of seats for Backward Classes ‘B’ was 145 which included 79 reserved for women. The general category had a total of 1,288 seats which included 510 seats reserved for women.
Of the 907 polling stations, 131 were sensitive and 59 were very sensitive. As many as 54 polling stations were in naxal-affected areas.
The number of returning officers appointed for Kundapur taluk was 62, Udupi 59 and Karkala 34. A total of 171 assistant returning officers had been appointed for the elections including 67 for Kundapur, 68 for Udupi and 36 for Karkala.
He directed the deputy superintendents of police and the tahsildars to work in close coordination with one another. The departments of Police and Excise should work in tandem and set up check posts where necessary.
Flying squads would be formed for the smooth conduct of the polls.
The administrative machinery should gear itself up to meet any complaint or contingency, Dr. Vishal added.
