Bengaluru, Oct 19: After coming under widespread criticism, K.S. Eshwarappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and former Deputy Chief Minister has apologised for the insensitive remarks he had made to a query by a woman TV journalist the increase in crimes against women across the State.
On Saturday, while replying to a query by the journalist on whether the BJP had failed to remind the government on its duties to prevent sexual harassment against women, Mr. Eshwarappa had said “if someone drags you away and rapes you, what can the Opposition leaders do”.
However he said rather than reading into the verbal context of his statements, it was necessary to understand the emotions behind it. “I was deeply pained by the increase in crime against women in the State and the failure of the government to prevent them.
Earlier also, I had asked whether CM and HM would remain silent if such crimes took place against the members of their family,” he said.
