Mangaluru, Dec 3: ‘My Job’ an Android App developed by two teenagers as part of ‘vote for employment’ was launched at a press conference jointly organized by the local unit of Solidarity Youth Movement and Karnataka for Employment in the city on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mutthu Raju, Organizer, Karnataka for Employment, Bengaluru, said that though unemployment has been a major challenge of the country and the state for decades, no political party has considered it seriously so far. He said that youth should realise their real challenge and vote for those who can create jobs for them.

“The youth also must be empowered and form collectives to face the nepotism, corruption and also the system which is indifferent towards the problems of the youth in getting jobs,” he said.

“We hope to build this as a very big movement and the newly launched App is going to help us in a big way. Two students of just 19 years age, Vijay and Anudeep have helped us to build the App. They are still studying in second year at PES engineering college. Thousands of such youngsters have shown interest in this movement. Hence we are confident that upcoming elections are not going to revolve around just money, caste or religion. Instead this is going to have the real development of the state,” he said.

“But, ours is not a movement which just keeps blaming. This is a constructive movement which presents an alternative model of employment generation. We are also taking the help of experts in this regard. Our aim is to get implemented the blueprint of creating 50 lakh jobs in the next 5 years. But, the key to economics lies with the government. To put pressure on the governments to implement policies, election time is the best time. Hence, we are saying ‘Vote for employment’. And this movement will continue beyond elections,” he added.

Kasim K, Secretary, Solidarity Youth Movement, Mangaluru and Mr. Abdul Kabeer, Solidarity Youth Movement, Mangaluru, were present at the press meet.

A press release issued here by the ‘Karnataka for Employment’ stated that the App will give information about jobs and also help youth to get jobs, apart from creating awareness about the movement of job creation.

“This also helps us in constructive movement. You can send e-mails directly to Prime minister and Chief Minister through this App. Those who fill in their details will get job information regularly. Along with that, information about scholarship, self-employment is also available in the APP. You can call the helpline and also become members/volunteers through the APP,” it said.

All the three major political parties of Karnataka have already announced their yatras and two have started it so that they can reach out to the electorate in 224 assembly constituencies. “But we, on behalf of 52% of electorate (those between the age of 18 and 39 years) are amused by their narrative during these yatras. BJP is not saying much about the achievements of its government at the centre, but only targeting the state government. Similarly ruling congress party has already published a booklet to distribute during congress to door to door in which they are telling lies. According to them, theirs is the party which has fulfilled all the promises made in their 2013 election manifesto,” the release said.

“They have to answer to one important question. In the page 7 of their manifesto they had said that ‘during next 5 years atleast 50 lakh jobs will be created’. But in the booklet that they are reaching to every house, they are saying that they have created 12 lakh jobs. Then, where are the remaining 38 lakh jobs? Before that please give us the account of 12 lakh jobs. Similar questions will be put to BJP leaders who have Narendra Modi as their leader who had promised 1 crore jobs per year before 2014 elections. And JD(S) which has not behaved like a responsible opposition party in the last 4 1/2 years also has to answer us,” it said

“At the same time when these parties are going door to door, we are getting into the mobiles of the youth of this state so that they get the correct understanding of why they are not getting jobs. These youth form the 52% of the electorate. We want a share in nation building. If you don’t give us jobs, from where shall we get that share? This is not just the issue of our livelihood. This is the issue of nation’s development. But, unemployment is increasing every day. This is the news everyday in the media. From construction workers to IT workers, everywhere youth are losing out jobs,” the release stated.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
