Newsroom, May 5: The government of Pakistan yesterday remembered undivided India’s first freedom fighter Tipu Sultan on his 218th death anniversary. Though the move highlights the fact that Pakistan was also a part of India, the political observers suspect that the Bharatiya Janata Party may use it for its political gains in poll-bound south Indian state of Karnataka.
"Revisiting an important & influential historical figure, Tiger of Mysore - Tipu Sultan on his death anniversary. Right from his early years, he was trained in the art of warfare & had a fascination for learning," tweeted the Pakistani Government.
In another tweet, it said “Tipu Sultan was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. He has been lionized as a first freedom fighter because of his steadfast resistance against the British colonialism. On the occasion of #TipuSultan's 219th death anniversary. Let's have a look at some aspects of his life.”
The tweets come at a critical time when the Congress and BJP are headed for a pitched battle in Karnataka, which goes to the hustings on May 12.
Tipu Sultan, the only king in the modern history who laid down his life in the battle field, became a controversial figure when in 2015, the BJP and the Congress engaged in a war of words over his birth anniversary celebrations (Tipu Jayanthi) in Karnataka. Since then BJP tried to portray the 18th-century ruler as pro-Muslim and anti-Hindu king.
The Marathas had joined hands with the British invaders to end the era of Tipu Sultan, who wanted to defend the interests of Indians and defeat colonial forces.
