Mangaluru, Jul 30: Dakshina Kannada District has recorded its second H1N1 death this year with a pregnant woman succumbing to the viral pneumonia on Sunday.

The woman has been identified as Pushpavati, 27, resident of Yedapadavu, Ganjimutt, about 30 kms from here. Dr BV Rajesh, DK district surveillance officer, said the woman had contracted H1N1 a fortnight back and she was on treatment at a private hospital in the city.
Her pregnancy was at an advanced stage in the eighth month when she contracted the Swine influenza. The baby was removed by C-section a fortnight back. The baby is healthy and safe.
Dr Rajesh said pregnancy is a high risk situation and only immediate administering of Tamiflu within 36 hours can give relief or complications, mortality rates are high.
"The woman was staying at her parents' house in Ganjimutt and treatment was delayed by about two to three days even after initial symptoms of fever and other symptoms associated with H1N1, which caused complications," he said.
Earlier in March too, a six month pregnant woman succumbed to the Swine influenza within three days of contracting the virus.
