Belthangady, Nov 20: A mob gathered at the spot of a hit-and-run accident in which a youth was killed near Nekkilu in Belthangady taluk, and protested against the accused and demanding action from the authorities.
In a hit-and-run case, a youth died on the spot when the motorcycle he was riding near Nekkilu was knocked down by a Bolero on Wednesday morning.
The deceased youth is Dinesh Gowda (23), resident of Kangittilu in Koyyur. He had been employed at a mason at a village near Gerukatte.
It is learnt that Dinesh was on his way to work and was riding towards Gerukatte when his motorcycle was rammed by a Bolero driven by Balakrishna Poojary, a resident of Baje in Koyyur.
While Dinesh sustained severe injuries and died at the spot, Balakrishna is said to have fled from the scene.
Soon, several people gathered at the spot and demanded that Balakrishna be arrested immediately. The protestors demonstrated in front of Dinesh's body, and warned of continuing until higher police authorities arrive at the scene.
Such was the protestors fury, that stones were pelted when an ambulance reached the spot to shift the body to a hospital.
Belthangady police arrived at the spot along with police personnel from Punjalkatte and Dharmasthala to pacify the crowd. However, when this did not work, they resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Local MLA Vasanth Bangera and Hindu leader Mahesh Shetty also arrived at the scene and tried to convince the protestors, after which the body was taken to Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore.
A case has been registered by Belthangady police.
