Mangalore, Jun 14: In what can be called a startling revelation, more than one fifth of the elderly population experience abuse nationally and the prime perpetrators are none other than their own people!

A nation-wide report conducted by Help Age India shows that in about 39 per cent of the cases of the elderly abuse the daughters-in-law closely followed by the sons in about 38 per cent cases.

The report goes on to reveal that the major reasons cited by the elderly  for prevalence of abuse include lack of adjustment, economic dependence of the abused or the financial dependence of the abuser, increasing longevity and the likes.

As far as metros are concerned, Hyderbad city rules the roost with 37.50 per cent of elder abuse cases while Madhurai with 63 per cent and Kanpur with 60 per cent cases remain to be in the top of the list among other cities. Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan have the highest share among non reported case of abuse which is 100%.

Releasing the report at a formal programme at Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, Abhishekh Goyal, uperintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada District, said that parents love their children and give them everything that they can.

“This sense of sacrificing their own comforts for children is seen as a culture among parents in India. However, it is rather disheartening to see reports of elder abuse happening in India,” he said and added that the police department receives many complaints about abuse by son and daughter- in-law, but when police take action, the victims themselves plead to release the accused.

“Every youth should take care of their parents at their old age and every parent should have a economic support of their own till their end,” he said.

Dr. Olinda Pereira, Director of Vishwas Trust, Mangalore, Dr. Sophia. N. Fernandes, Principal-School of Social Work Roshini Nilaya, Mangalore, Sr. Silviya Fernandes, Mother Superior, Sisters of Charity, Mangalore, Shreenath Hegde, Secretar, Abhaya Ashraya Mangalore, were present.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
