Bengaluru, Apr 7: The customs department has registered over 200% increase in gold seizures at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), with sleuths having confiscated 100 kgs of gold worth Rs 30.48 crore during the financial year 2017-18. Comparatively, the department had seized 34.5 kg of gold worth Rs 9.97 crore the previous year.
This year, 34 people have been arrested in this regard, including Jordanian and Sri Lankan nationals. Around 34.5 kg of gold was seized in 2016-17, which was valued at nearly Rs 10 crore, with fewer arrests.
“Various modus operandi (MO) have been adopted by passengers for smuggling gold through KIA, including rectum concealment, gold biscuits in fruit juicers, gold pieces in ladies hair clips, in gas stove, concealment of gold wire in beadings of trolley bags, and beads in embroidery of dress material and so on,” additional commissioner of customs, Airport, Harsh Vardhan Umre said, adding that the seizures include from both passengers and air courier.
One interesting MO that was busted had seen concealment of gold foils in between layers of corrugated boxes. The sides of the boxes containing toys had gold foil neatly pasted in between layers of papers wrapped in carbon sheets.
“About 1kg gold was recovered from these boxes from a passenger coming from Dubai. Another unique MO in recent months was mixing of gold powder with soil and other materials in past form and concealing the mixture in pouches tied around the waist. About six such cases were detected by our officers,” Umre said.
The massive seizure on the one hand indicates an increase in attempts of gold smuggling, but on the other, the department claims, it also reflects the alertness and vigil of the officers to thwart such attempts.
