Udupi, Sep 28: A teenage girl who had recently started working after completing her PUC on Wednesday committed suicide by jumping into Swarna river from K.G. Road bridge on NH 66 at Kallyanpur near here.
Police and fire brigade personnel along with the help of local divers searched for the body of Chaitra (18) daughter of Chandrashekar and Jyothi from Puttur in Ambagilu searched till late night but in vain.
Chaithra was working for Net G, a mobile shop at Ambalpady for the past 4 months. On Wednesday evening, after her work was over, she boarded a bus and alighted at Santhekatte and then started walking towards her house.
It is learnt that she was seen talking over the phone and crying by some people. Then suddenly she left her bag and sandals over the bridge and jumped into Swarma river with her mobile phone in hand.
According to the Brahmavar police, Chaitra jumped into the river around 5 p.m. The reason for her taking the extreme step is not known.
The search operation will continue on Thursday. A case had been registered and investigations were on, the police said.
