Mangalore, May 12: Three members of a family including two children were killed on spot and the mother of the children sustained critical injuries in a ghastly road mishap near Surthkal on the outskirts of the city on Monday morning.
The mishap took place at around 10:00 a.m. when an auto-rickshaw, in which the family was travelling rammed into a speedy lorry on Udupi-Mangalore highway.
The deceased have been identified as Nishmitha (11), Harshita (9) and their uncle Sunil (24). The children's mother Savitha sustained is undergoing treatment.
It is learnt that the rash driving of the auto-rickshaw driver, who crossed the road without noticing oncoming lorry, was responsible for the tragedy.
The driver and two children on board the auto-rickshaw died on spot. Children's mother was rushed to a private hospital for emergency treatment.
The impact of the accident was such that the auto-rickshaw was reduced into a bundle of metals.
According to sources, Savitha and her two children had come from Mumbai to Ulaibettu near Mangalore to spend vacation. On Monday morning they were on the way to visit Savitha's elder sister, who stays in Padre.
