
Mangalore, Feb 24: Mangalore University, Mangalagangothri awarded doctorate degrees to 112 students – 20 in Arts, 68 in Science, eight in Commerce and 16 in Education, at its 32nd annual convocation programme that was held on Monday at the university.
In addition to the degrees, students received 38 gold medals and 65 cash prizes at the convocation. The chief guest Dr K Radhakrishnan, secretary of Department of Space, Government of India and chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), conferred the students with their degrees.
Delivering the convocation address, Dr K Radhakrishnan said that the technology of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite System had been utilised in the INSAT-3D which was the first satellite in the world to provide high spatial resolution imagery. It has continuously provided profiles of humidity and temperature over the region of Indian Ocean, including weather forecasting over the eastern coast of India which was severely hit by the cyclone Phailin, he said.
He said that the Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system established vast advancement in telecommunications, television broadcasting, radio networking, meteorology and disaster management services. Currently, there is a lot of demand for communication transponders with more than 200 transponders in the satellite constellation supporting communication network for strategic, government, commercial and societal use across the country, he said.
Talking about the recent space programmes such as the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyan), he said that the country's first Mars orbiter, which was expected to arrive near Mars on September 24 this year, he said that the entire mission had been a technology marvel. If the mission is successful, India will be the fourth country to put a satellite in the orbit of Mars. It will be one of the major achievements for ISRO, he said, adding that they were moving towards enhanced launch capability through the current launch vehicle development project GSLV-III.
He said that the beginning of 2014 witnessed another milestone in the space programme with the successful flight test of cryogenic stage. Along with the development of the launch vehicle GSLV-III, this will enable the country to launch a human spaceflight programme shortly, adding that the GSLV-III would be functional by June.
Following the convocation, Dr Radhakrishnan inaugurated the new management block, SVP Institute of Kannada studies and mini auditorium complex in the university campus.
Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, Vice-chancellor of Mangalore University presided over the convocation.
Prof P S Yadapadithaya, registrar, Prof B Narayana, registrar (evaluation), various deans and faculty members were present on the occasion.
