Mangalore, Oct 25: As many as five Bajrang Dal activists have been booked for abducting and attempting to outrage the modesty of a Christian woman and forcing her to marry a Hindu boy in the city.

The development comes after the Catholic Christian woman, who managed escape from the clutches of her'husband' four days after her marriage, filed a case against several Bajrang Dal activists at jurisdictional Konaje police station.

Konaje police registered cases under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty); 147 (punishment for rioting); 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly,); 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc.); 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement.); 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt.) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation.).

The victim, a resident of Elyarpadavu, about 15km from here, also revealed that Jagadeesh Shenava, president, Mangalore district unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had threatened to harm her parents if she didn't marry the activist.

She had married Roshan Shetty at Arya Samaj in the city on October 16 in the presence of some Bajrang Dal activists. The girl's parents too had visited the wedding venue where a tiff occurred between both the parties and the girl had stood firm on her decision to marry Shetty.

However, on fourth day, she escaped from a hotel where she was staying with Shetty and returned to her parents. In her complaint she claimed that Shetty and five Bajrang Dal activists had drugged, abducted and forced her to marry him.

She said that she knew Shetty personally and she had gone to meet him in the market to give some money. It was then that he forced her to drink some juice laced with a sedative. She also stated that the activists had threatened to harm her parents if she refused to marry Shetty.

She has named Bajrang Dal leader Jagadish Shenava for forcing her to sign a few papers at the deputy commissioner's office on October 17. The police have registered cases against Shetty, Shenava, Dinesh Kadri, Sharath Amblamogaru, Ganesh Kumpala and Praveen.

She also alleged that four persons tried to outrage her modesty at a house in Attavar. On October 19, she said she escaped from Global Residency Hotel when Shetty was in the bathroom.

On the other hand Shenava has rebutted the all allegations. "Four policemen were witness to the marriage at Arya Samaj and they should be first accused in this case. I came after police left. The next day, the couple went to the police station as the girl's father filed a complaint. This was a three-year love affair culminating in marriage, he said.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hitendra said the investigation was on.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
