Kasargod, Oct 2: A six-year-old girl died after she accidentally stepped on a live wire while playing near her house at Ethadka near Kumbadaje in the district yesterday.
The deceased, Arpita (6), was a Class 1 student at Ethadka U P School. Her mother Jayanti, an Anganwadi assistant, is undergoing treatment at a hospital as she suffered injuries in her futile bid to save the little girl.
The tragedy took place when the girl, after returning from school, went out of the house to play. An electric cable had snapped as a tree had fallen on it during heavy wind. The girl was electrocuted after she accidentally stepped on it. The mother rushed to the spot immediately and pulled the girl.
Both had suffered injuries, but the condition of Arpita was critical. She was rushed to Kasargod general hospital, where she breathed her last.
Arpita was the youngest among three children of Janati and Jayaram, who is a construction worker. Her brothers Hemant and Saikumar are Class 9 and Class 3 students in the same school.
A case has been registered in Badiyadka police station and investigations are on.
