Mangalore, May 13: Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held a protest outside the Mescom office in the city on Monday against the unfair distribution of electricity to farmers in three taluks in Dakshina Kannada and demanded the withdrawal of the term dark areas' for Belthangady, Bantwal and Sullia taluks in the district.
Speaking during the protest, AAP Lok Sabha Candidate M R Vasudev said that farmers were prevented from installing three-phase irrigation pumpsets, based on the survey conducted in 1997 which showed reduction of groundwater levels in the rural taluks of the district. Based on the survey, the rural taluks were classified as dark and grey areas which prohibited the installation of these pumpsets. However, although the three taluks were removed from the list of dark and grey areas' following a survey in 2009, Mescom has still not authorised the installation of pumpsets in Bantwal, Belthangady and Sullia taluks. The Mescom officials were unaware that the taluks had been removed from the list, he said.
With farmers in the said taluks being deprived of power to the irrigation pumpsets, he said that the numerous petitions to Mescom, former Energy ministers and the state government had fallen on deaf ears.
He further said that there were vested political interests that prevented the pumpsets from being given to farmers, warning that the situation could get grim for them if the Yettinahole diversion project was implemented.
With Mescom refusing to authorise pumpsets, many farmers have had to shell out large sums of money to convert their pumpsets into authorised ones, while also to pay for the installation of the connection and electric poles. The Mescom have been cheating the people, he alleged.
