Puttur, Dec 9: Talk of a house warming ceremony and what comes to mind is a newly built house with the proud owners smiling and welcoming their guests and showing the new house with an air of pride around them.

Well dressed guests, gifts, sumptuous meal and religious rituals are all important parts of our ceremonies. In our individual happiness there is no time to spare for the society. But, on Sunday a house warming ceremony re-wrote traditions by making society a party of the ceremony.

It was the house warming ceremony of Puttur's Aathoor Masjid Khateeb Al-Haji Ibrahim Thangal and his newly built residence 'Hidaaya Manzil' became witness to a history.

Make a difference

As a memento to mark the ceremony, a physically challenged person named Koila Thukrappa was given mobility aide, which for sure has changed entire life of the recipient. Thukrappa who had to be dependent on others to move around had tears in his eyes as 'Akshara Santha' Harekala Hajabba handed over the mobility aide to him. On the other hand, Harekala Hajabba who had dedicated his entire life for the sake of education too had damp eyes looking at the plight in which Thukrappa had spent so many years of his life.

Health check up camp, blood donation camp and felicitation to achievers were also held as a part of the ceremony.

Health check-up

When the guests and relatives arrived at the newly built house, the proud owners of the house did not just welcome with a warm hug, but also forwarded them to a group of medical experts who checked the health conditions of the guests with a smile. The health check up camps were open not just to the invitees, but everyone from the village had access to the medical professional from Attavar KMC Hospital who were present at the venue. Over 1000 persons took advantage of the camp irrespective of religious, caste and creed.

Renowned Urologists Muhammad Salim and Zainuddin Muhammad led the medical team.

Blood donation

It was a marvelous scene when over 150 people who came to be a part of the house warming ceremony voluntarily came forward to donate blood. The doctors explaining the importance of blood donation said, “Some drops of your blood can add several years to a needy patient's life.'

The guests who were moved by the words of the doctors and by the efforts of the Khateeb came forward in large numbers and made use of the opportunity given to them.

Felicitation to achievers

While everyone who had come to become a part of house warming ceremony were all praises for the Khateeb, they were out for yet another surprise. As many as five achievers from various walks of life and different religions were called upon the dais to accept a felicitation.

'Akshara Santha' Harekala Hajabba, Vedavyas Acharya, who has toiled for communal harmony, Joseph Crasta from Snehalaya Ashram, Peer Muhammad, an activists fighting for rights of endosulphan victims and Dr Ilyas Bajpe were felicitated on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
