The nomination of Jabbar was made by Governor H?R Bhardwaj on the recommendation of the government.
It is said the government had the option of leaving the post vacant for the next 42 days, but decided to recommend Jabbar on Wednesday in an attempt to shore up its numbers in the Council.
Speaking to the media, Jabbar said he decided to take oath for such a short duration on assurances from the chief minister that he would be the government nominee for next term, too.
The 57-year-old Congressman entered politics in 1987 as a member of the National Students' Union of India during his college days.
A BA graduate, Jabbar is a businessman. Council chairperson D H Shankaramurthy said Jabbar's term may be the shortest in the history of the Legislative Council.
