Mangalore/Udupi, Dec 19: Opposing the implementation of Karnataka Professional Education Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006, students under the aegis of ABVP staged a protest meeting near Clock Tower here.
The protesters said that if the government fails to withdraw its decision on implementing the Act, then the ABVP will intensify its protest in the State.
The CET in Karnataka was a model to the entire country. However, owing to pressure from private institutions, the government is implementing the Act. A petition was submitted to the government through district administration on the occasion.
Claiming that the act gives monopoly to the private institutions on the fee structure of government seats in medical, dental, engineering, unani, ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy colleges. They also accused that students from Karnataka will be deprived of opportunities, due to tough competition with a large number of students attempting COMED-K examinations.
The protestors alleged that the implementation of the Act will curb the educational rights of meritorious students, who hail financially poor backward. Shouting slogans against the government, they urged the government to step roll back the decision of implementing the act.
“The poor meritorious students will be deprived of professional education, as the government quota will be cancelled in private engineering and medical colleges,” alleged the protesters.
In a written petition, the protestors said that 45 per cent of engineering seats, 40 per cent of the medical seats and 35 per cent of the dental science seats from the government quota will go to private institutions and private aided - private institutions will be left with not even a single government seat, if the act is implemented.
