Mangalore, Mar 6: Days after her appointment as the new president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Prof M Janaki Brahmavar from Udupi said that the academy and its members had to be pro-active to boost Tulu language, its culture and traditions and bring it to the fore.
Addressing mediapersons at a press conference at the academy office here on Thursday, the Tulu litterateur said that she would give emphasis on promoting the language from an academic angle than merely organising programmes of grandeur. For the language to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, it has to be implemented in textbooks to be taught as a language in schools. In this regard, the academy has brought out textbooks for Class 8 and Class 9, and will shortly bring out textbooks for Class 10, she said, adding that the academy had to be active to ensure the inclusion of the language in the Eighth Schedule.
She said that due to the absence of a president of the academy in the last 10 months, no work had been done towards boosting Tulu language. Now, since elections are approaching, it has been decided that a proper action plan will be prepared after the elections take place, she said, adding that her focus would be on conservation and encouragement towards the language, its culture and tradition.
She also emphasised the need for commencement of Tulu Sangha ' in schools and colleges, and also starting Tulu certificate and diploma courses in colleges. The language has the right terms and capability to express things through them, she said.
She said that 40 percent of the construction work on a three-storeyed Tulu Bhavan had been completed, at a cost of Rs 3 crores released by the government. The estimate budget has now been revised from Rs 4.8 crores to Rs 7 crores, said registrar of the academy Dr B Chandrahas Rai.
Prof Janaki said that she was in the process of translating Kuvempu 's literary work Smashana Kurukshetra ' to Tulu.
The other members appointed to the Academy are Prof Vedavati, D M Kulal, Subhashchandra Padival, Durgaprasad Rai, Jayasheela, Mohan Kuppala, Vasanth Shetty Bellare, Krishnappa, Raghuveer and Roopakala Alva.
