Mangaluru, Oct 4: President of Shashwatha Neeravari Horata Samiti, Chikkaballapur Anjaneya Reddy urged the state government to propose a scientifically feasible alternative for Yettinahole project in order to provide drinking water to the people of Kolar and Chikkaballapur, one which would not cause damage to the Western Ghats and Nethravati water.

Speaking at a press conference after a joint discussion of leaders was held on Sunday to discuss the further course of action to urge the state government to abandon the Yettinahole project, he said that the people of Kolar and Chikkaballapur had no confidence of getting water through the hastily-chalked Yettinahole project, and wished for an alternative which was scientifically feasible and did not cause damage to other parts of the state. “As the National Green Tribunal bench suggests, the government should review the project before implementing it. First, they should determine how much water is available at the source, conduct a scientific study and only then, tell the people of Kolar-Chikkaballapur districts how much water we will receive,” he said.

He urged the state government and elected representatives representing Kolar and Chikkaballapur as well as coastal Karnataka not to give false and misleading statements to the people concerning the Yettinahole project.

'Yettinahole multipurpose project; DPR misleading'

National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK) Prof G S Mayya said that the feasibility report and detailed project report prepared by the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) were the same. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is highly misleading at every stage and reveals that the Yettinahole project was actually a multi-purpose project, not a drinking water project as it is touted. Out of the 24 TMC which will be diverted from the tributaries of Nethravati river, the water proposed for Kolar and Chikkaballapur (parched districts) is merely 5 TMC. There is no doubt that the project is extremely disastrous to Western Ghats, he said, stressing that the government should stop the implementation of the project.

Rubbishing the claim that the water would be diverted to provide drinking water to parched districts, Prof Mayya said that transporting water through an open canal of 276-km in length would not reach the beneficiaries in Kolar and Chikkaballapur. The KNNL has also taken faulty estimation of rainfall in Sakleshpur as their basis for calculating available water at the source while preparing the DPR for Yettinahole project, he criticised.

Congress leader Vijay Kumar Shetty said that the state government did not have a certain stand on the project. Despite assurances from the chief minister that the project would not be implemented in a hasty manner, they have begun the project by keeping people of the state in the dark, he said.

Rally to Yettinahole to create awareness

Speaking on the occasion, retired IAS officer V V Bhat said that in the joint discussion of several representatives held on Sunday, it was decided to organise a jatha to Yettinahole in Sakleshpur taluk in the coming days to spread awareness among people on the consequences of the project locally.

An expert committee should be formed by the government to conduct a social impact assessment of the project in Dakshina Kannada, considering the entire district as the affected area. A discussion was held on protecting the integrity of the entire Nethravati river basin, and urging the government to form a legislation to abandon the project, he said.

He informed mediapersons that out of the three petitions filed before the National Green Tribunal in Chennai on the Yettinahole project, the next hearing on one of the petitions would be on October 19.

Senior advocate Shankar Bhat and several representatives were present on the occasion and participated in the joint discussion with Anjaneya Reddy

Mangaluru, May 4: The Mangaluru International Airport was besieged with a harrowing message of terror recently, when an email, purportedly from malevolent elements, menacingly declared the planting of bombs within the airport premises.

Addressed to the office of the airport authority, the missive, steeped in ominous overtones, bore the ominous signature of a terrorist faction, ominously named 'Terrorizers 111'.

The communication, disseminated in English, ominously detailed the clandestine emplacement of explosives in areas eluding facile detection, accompanied by a chilling warning of their imminent detonation. The threat, ominously looming over not only the infrastructure but also the airborne vessels, portended a catastrophic deluge of bloodshed and loss.

In response to this dire communiqué, airport authorities swiftly engaged the apparatus of law enforcement, dispatching urgent alerts to the vigilant guardians of public safety. Acting upon the dictates of higher echelons, a formal dossier of this menacing correspondence was meticulously compiled, cloaked in the veil of confidentiality to thwart any premature dissemination.

Mangaluru International Airport found itself in grim camaraderie with more than 30 counterparts under the aegis of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and private domains, all recipients of this chilling electronic diatribe. A comprehensive net of precautionary measures was swiftly cast, fortifying the bastions of security in anticipation of any nefarious designs lurking within the shadows.

Israeli military aircraft have heavily bombed the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip accompanied with ground advances shortly after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas said it had agreed to a proposal on ceasefire in Gaza.

A Palestinian journalist reported flares in the night sky, while locals said dozens of reconnaissance drones flew overhead.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa and Egyptian media said Israeli military vehicles advanced towards the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, as well as the Karem Shalom crossing with the Israeli-occupied territories.

A Palestinian security official and an Egyptian authority have told the Associated Press news agency that Israeli tanks have entered Rafah, reaching as close as 200 meters from Rafah’s border crossing with neighboring Egypt.

The Israeli military has said it was conducting “targeted strikes” against Hamas in eastern Rafah.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has also said "Israel is continuing the operation in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas" in order to advance the release of captives and what it called "the other objectives of the war."

In the meantime, it described the proposal on ceasefire as "far from Israel's essential demands," but added that it would send negotiators for talks "to exhaust the potential for arriving at an agreement."

The military strikes on Rafah came ahead of talks in Egypt on Tuesday aimed at sealing a truce proposal accepted by Hamas, which was put forward by Qatari and Egyptian mediators.

According to a copy of the proposal, there will be three phases to ending Israel’s onslaught against Gaza.

The first phase calls for a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Netzarim corridor and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes. The second phase involves an announcement of a permanent cessation of military operations. In the last phase, there would be a complete end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In return, Israel would be required to release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners, withdraw its troops from certain regions of the Gaza Strip, and allow Palestinians to travel from the south of the coastal sliver to the north.

About 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, once designated a “safe zone” by the Israeli military. Palestinians are now struggling to evacuate the city, after the Israeli military dropped leaflets ordering them to leave as a large-scale assault on the city is planned.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that a ground invasion of Rafah would be “intolerable” and called on Israel and Hamas “to go an extra mile” to reach a truce deal.

“This is an opportunity that cannot be missed, and a ground invasion in Rafah would be intolerable because of its devastating humanitarian consequences, and because of its destabilizing impact in the region,” Guterres told reporters on Monday ahead of a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in New York.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has also warned that Israel is “jeopardizing the deal by bombing Rafah.”
