Mangalore, Feb 26: Karavali Jeevanadi Nethravati Rakshana Samiti, led by former MLA Vijayakumar Shetty and other activists, has called for a district-wide self-declared bandh on Monday (March 3), in opposition against the laying of foundation stone for the proposed Yettinahole/Nethravati river diversion project in Chikkaballapur district.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Vijaykumar Shetty said that the self-declared bandh would be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday. Inspite of protests by students and organisations to shelve the project, the state government is set to lay the foundation stone for the Nethravati project. It is unfortunate that the government has decided to go ahead with the project which will affect every citizen in the district merely for selfish gains, he said, adding that the project was not shelved inspite of the world heritage tag given to Western Ghats by the United Nations organisation.
The proposed Nethravati project, if implemented, will be a major injustice to the people in the district who depend on the river directly or indirectly. It is a multi-purpose project with the main intention to supply water for industrial areas in Bangalore and Chikkaballapur and not to the parched areas of Kolar and Chikkaballapur, he said.
He said that bus services from Bangalore and health services in the district would not be affected by the bandh.
Speaking on the occasion, activist M G Hegde said that the state government had no courtesy for the people of Dakshina Kannada. “If the government does not respond to it seriously, we will resort to intense measures, the consequences of which will fall on the government and people and Dakshina Kannada,” he declared.
He said that the bandh would not be forcefully imposed on people and services in the district, but requested that citizens to support the call for bandh for a crucial cause.
Several other organisations have responded in a positive way to support the bandh, he added.
Activists P V Mohan, Dinesh Holla, Uttam Alva, Shashiraj Hegde and others were present.
