Mangalore, Aug 2: Close to the heels of the arrest of an RSS activist for making derogatory remarks against a woman on Facebook, few like-minded organisations staged a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Saturday demanding strict action against offenders who posted similar derogatory comments against women or a particular community on social networking sites.
Organisations such as the district units of DYFI and SFI, Forum Against Atrocities on Women (FAAW), Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations and like-minded organisations protested against the inaction of the Indian government against instances of cyber crime. They demanded strict action against the perpetrators of such crimes.
Condemning the derogatory comments on social networking sites, state president of DYFI Muneer Katipalla said that organisations such as ABVP and RSS take to streets condemning the sexual crimes on women, members of the same organisations indulge in posting disgusting and derogatory comments on Facebook.
While action is taken by the police on two youngsters for an inoffensive post posted on Facebook during the time of Bal Thackeray's death in Mumbai, the cyber cell of the police department does not take action when communal and provocative remarks are posted by learned individuals.
Referring to the arrest of RSS member V R Bhat in Bangalore, he said that the offender should be booked under serious charges for making a direct threat to a woman on a public platform.
He also said that Facebook pages with communally-provocative and offensive content should be immediately removed from the site. Pages such as Namma Belthangady' with derogatory content should be removed from Facebook and action should be taken against the admin of the page, he said.
FIRA president Narendra Nayak said that communal forces, if allowed to grow unchecked, could prove harmful for the society in the long run. “The communal forces are the ones responsible for the war and genocide in Iran, Afghanistan and Palestine. By remaining silent and inactive against the communal forces in our own country, we are lending them indirect support,” he said.
B K Imtiyaz, Nithin Kuthar, Charan, Asha Latha, Raghavendra Rao, Prasanna, Jayanthi Shetty, Jyothi, Rohini and others participated in the protest.
