Activists observe 'Black Day' against Nethravati diversion, warn of Telangana model agitation

March 3, 2014

Mangalore, Mar 3: Amidst tight security, several protestors led by Karavali Jeevanadi Nethravati Samrakshana Samiti including former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, P V Mohan, M G Hegde and T K Sudhir demonstrated against the Yettinahole (Nethravati diversion), at Hampankatta junction here on Monday.

As a mark of their protest, the demonstrators burnt copies of the detailed project report (DPR) on the proposed Yettinahole project, and observed a black day ' in view of the foundation-laying of the project in Chikkaballapur district on the same day.

A self-declared bandh was observed by the Samiti members, which saw good response throughout the entire district.

Interestingly, most of the protesters were Congress leaders and activists of Dakshina Kannada and they lashed out at senior Congress leaders like union minister M Veerappa Moily for supporting the controversial project.

Addressing the demonstrators, Vijaykumar Shetty said that the bandh was one of the most significant in the history of Dakshina Kannada, which witnessed extensive support from all quarters. There is no doubt that this was the most successful bandh in the district, he said, adding that the struggle to save Nethravati river would continue with intense measures in the coming days.

Bandh, a warning to CM

One of the activists P V Mohan, who expressed his objection to the project, told reporters earlier that the self-declared bandh was only the beginning of their long protest against the Nethravati diversion project.

Now, the people of Dakshina Kannada are finally awakening to the reality of the Yettinahole project. However, vested politicians do not heed the cry of the people. It is time that the chief minister is made aware of our objection to the project. The struggle to save Nethravati river should prolong in the manner of powerful protests made by people for the cause of Telangana, he said.

When asked about the silence of ministers hailing from the district on the Yettinahole project, he said that the three local ministers had already submitted dissent notes to the government in this regard.

“The district-wide bandh is a warning to the state government. If the government still does not heed our demand, we will undertake a Jail bharo ' protest in coming days,” he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
