Mangaluru, Jan 12: Rs 34 crore of additional compensation has been released by the Karnataka government to those whose land was acquired for extension of runway at Mangaluru airport at Kenjar on the outskirts of the city.
The land owners had received minimum compensation from the government after their lands were acquired in 1990.
In 2006, as many as 77 land-losers including Christine D’Souza had approached the court for enhancement of the compensation amount fixed for acquisition of land.
After several months, the court passed separate decrees stating the enhanced amount of compensation that needed to be paid to each petitioner.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said the district administration had submitted a proposal to the state government for sanction and release of Rs 34 crore compensation amount.
Peeved at the delay on part of the state government in disbursing the compensation in time, the land owners had moved the court again, this time seeking attachment of immovable assets of the land acquisition officer - the assistant commissioner, Mangaluru sub-division.
Taking note of the possible embarrassment that this situation would have caused to the state government, Ibrahim sent afresh a fresh proposal seeking release of the compensation amount, which the state government honoured and released on Monday.
