Mangalore, Mar 28: All nomination papers filed for contesting in the Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency were found valid in the scrutiny held here on Thursday. There are 17 candidates in the fray vying to be the Member of Parliament representing the district.
The Deputy Commissioner, who is the District Returning Officer, held the scrutiny in the presence of election observers and representatives of candidates. The nominations can be withdrawn till 3 p.m. on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that out of the 17 candidates who have filed nominations, four are from recognised political parties which includes B Janardhan Poojary (Cong), Nalin Kumar Kateel (BJP), Moose Kunhi (BSP) and K Yadava Shetty (CPI(M)). Three candidates are from registered, but not recognised political parties, which includes Mohammed Haneef Khan (SDPI), M R Vasudeva (AAP) and Supreeth Kumar Poojari (HJP). The remaining 10 are independent candidates.
A total of 24 cases of violation of model code of conduct and 16 cases pertaining to Excise Department have been registered with the election officer as on Thursday. Of the 24 cases, police FIR has been filed in 10 cases and Rs 8.60 lakh cash has been seized.
Dakshina Kannada constituency has 1,103 service voters who will get an opportunity to vote through postal ballot in this election.
Of this, maximum number of military-men are from Sullia, as the assembly segment has 344 service voters. Envelopes with voted ballots by service personnel that are posted from far off places are received and accepted even on the counting day.
Assistant Returning Officer Sadashiv Prabhu has asked Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers to bring 12 (A) Form requesting for the Election Duty Certificate, on the training programme for polling personnel on April 2. With EDC in hand, PROs and APROs are eligible to vote in the polling booth/station they have been assigned with.
