Mangalore, Sep 30: Renowned thinker K N Govindacharya has expressed his fear over the crumbling democratic system.
Stating that efforts are being made to keep the poor and the middle classes away from the democratic set up, he said that the outcome of the same has been devastating as the essence of'government of the people, by the people, for the people' is being lost.
Addressing a gathering at the'alternate political convention' at Town Hall, he said that it is an irony that we are electing people with criminal credentials.
“Land mafia has joined hands with the political leaders. There are huge groups of parliamentarians and MLAs who only think of safeguarding the interest of multi-nationals and corporate giants. Religious places and institutions of learning have been commericialised. Alternate political option is the way out to save further damages from happening,” he said adding that though there were debates over providing an option of rejecting the contestants fighting the election, on the EVMs itself, the concept was bitterly opposed by the politicians.
Economist Jagadish Shettigar, thinker M C Raj among others were present.
