Belgaum, May 28: Sayed Waqas from Bhatkal who was arrested on charges of sending an offensive MMS against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, finally was released after Belgaum police concluded he was not guilty.

Waqas was arrested by Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bangalore police late on Saturday and taken to Belgaum on Sunday. Hemanth Nimbalkar, joint commissioner (crime) said: "If the investigating officer has evidence to prove he's innocent, they can release him. Our team has no role in this. We were only roped in to help the Belgaum team make the arrest as he (Waqas) was in Bangalore."
Police are investigating a complaint lodged by Hindutva activist and Modi fan Jayant Mukund Tinekar, who complained he received an offensive message against Modi on WhatsApp on May 16.
Waqar, an MBA student at Anjuman Institute of Management, Bhatkal, was doing his internship in Bangalore when he was picked up.
The CCB on Saturday raided the apartment in Bangalore where Waqas was staying, and picked up four of his friends too. While his friends were released the same day, Waqas was taken to Khanapur in Belgaum.
Superintendent of Police Chandragupta said that preliminary investigation provided no evidence against Waqas. The complainant Jayant Tinaikar gave the wrong number to the police. Since a case had been registered against Waqas, further investigation would be carried out to trace the origin of the MMS, he said. Meanwhile, the Khanapur police team, headed by Circle Inspector Mahanteshwar Jiddi, interrogated Waqas at the Nadgad police station.
Now it is come to light that Jayant had lodged false complaint against Waqas only because of the fact that latter is a student from Bhatkal. Waqas had not sent the message to anyone. He was one of the members of WhatsApp chat group which received the anti-Modi message. However no action has been taken by the police against Jayant for false complaint.
