Mangalore East Police Station has registered case of medical negligence against Dr Poornima Nair and Dr Rohan Gatti based on the complaint of victim Umm-ul-Miqass (name changed). In a bid to evade arrest, on Wednesday both the doctors appeared before court and secured bail.
However, Police Inspector T D Nagaraj, who is investigating the case, said that even though the accused had managed to secure the bail, they could be questioned by the cops to collect information on other people who had helped during the operation.
He said that the police have already obtained documents pertaining to the hysterectomy (operation to remove women's uterus) carried out on the women in Mangalore Nursing Home in 2010. However, investigating team is in the process of collecting more documents, he said.
Police have also recorded the statement of veteran surgeon Dr Abdul Majeed, who successfully operated on the woman on Monday and removed the rusted artery forces, which resemble scissors, from her stomach at Unit Health Complex.
Medical sources said that the condition of Umm-ul-Miqass, who is still in the Intensive Care Unit, was stable but critical after the crucial operation.
However, according to Dr Abdul Majeed, doctors cannot predict anything as the presence of artery forceps for more than four years in the pelvic area has caused multiple perforations to the large intestine.
On the other hand the medical superintendent of Mangalore Nursing Home Dr Anantha Lakshmi reportedly played down the issue stating that sometimes it is natural for doctors to make some mistakes.
