Moodbidri, Jul 30: Series of rumours aimed at triggering tension on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr finally spilled out with arrests of few persons at Sacheripet near Moodbidri on July 29.
Police also resorted to lathi charge to take the situation under control.
Since a week there were rumours of assault, cattle theft, befriending with girls and so on.
However, on the day of Eid, a gang of miscreants led by one Dinesh assaulted a Muslim youth without any provocation, sources said. Based on a complaint, police arrested Dinesh and three other accused in the case.
Soon after the arrests, a large number of Hindu youth gathered outside the police station demanding the release. Sensing the further trouble, Karkala Rural Station House Officer Mahadeva Setti contacted Udupi ASI Annamalai. Additional police contingents were sent to Sacheripet and dispersed the crowd resorting lathi charge.
BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari and others also visited the spot.
