Mnagaluru, Jun 19: Customs officers at Mangalore International Airport, on the outskirts of the city seized foreign currency notes amounting to total of 20,000 Saudi Arabian Riyals in various denominations (equivalent to Rs 3.52-lakh) from a Dubai-bound passenger.

The accused has been identified as Jafar Sadique Chala Mohammed Kunhi, a resident of Vidyanagar in neighbouring Kasargod. Jafar was not in possession of any valid money exchange documents for the same, superintendent of customs, MIA stated.
Jafar attempted to smuggle the Saudi Arabian currency out of India to Dubai from MIA late on Wednesday. He was scheduled to go to Dubai on Jet Airways Flight 9W532. Further investigation is on.
Incidentally, this is third such case that customs officials have busted at MIA since May. They had seized 12,500 Saudi Arabian Riyals, 7,755 UAE Dirhams, 50 Kuwait Dinars and 400 Qatar Riyals equivalent to Rs 3,75,023 from a Kasaragod man on May 24.
On May 20, foreign currency — 6,600 British Pounds — equivalent to Rs 6,49,400 was seized from two youth hailing from Pallikere in Kasargod district.
Indians travelling abroad can carry foreign exchange as per prescribed limit provided the same is procured from authorized money exchangers, customs officials maintained.
