Hospet, Sep 13: A newborn baby girl was saved from being cremated alive in Hospet in Bellary district, after an auto-driver - Ramesh - heard her cry in the bag in which she was being taken to the cemetery. The man who had hired the auto - the girl's uncle - had said she was dead.

However, the uncle fled after they got there. The girl's 22-year old mother - the man's sister - is also missing. After she was admitted to the hospital, she had told doctors that her husband was dead, and that she'd come with her brother. She gave birth to the girl on Thursday, and it was after she was discharged three days that her sibling was caught taking her daughter to the cemetery.
"We'll take complaints from the auto-drivers, and take the necessary action against the people responsible for the baby's plight," said Kumarachandra, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hospet.
The newborn is now in the custody of Bellari district's child protection officer Mahammad Sarvar, and the local Don Bosco Centre. She'll soon be taken to a baby care centre in Bellari. For now, Sarvar has promised to look for her parents, and to take care of her.
The matter has also been brought to the notice of the Woman and Child Welfare Department.
