Bengaluru, Jul 14: Services in over 200 Primary Health Centres (PHC) are likely to be affected when Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) doctors go on an indefinite strike starting from July 20.

As many as 589 doctors recruited under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) will stage a protest at Freedom Park here, seeking an increase in wages and regularisation of jobs. This, comes soon after the State government announced a steep hike in the salaries of allopathy doctors. While the entry-level salary of an allopathy doctor is now close to Rs 60,000, Ayush doctors still draw Rs 15,400 according to the NRHM?Karnataka Ayush Doctor’s Association.
According to the association, their salaries were last hiked before the fifth pay commission.
Dr Shivalingappa, President of NRHM?Karnataka Ayush Doctor’s Association said the decision to stage a protest comes after the heath minister gave false assurances and did not address their concerns. “We approached both the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Ayush in this regard. Each of them played the blame game. While the health commissioner is of the opinion that the Ayush department is responsible for a hike in our salaries, the Ayush director says that since we work for the NRHM, the decision ought to be taken by the Health department. Neither of them look into our problems,” he said.
The Association claimed that they also approached the Centre in this regard.
