Bangalore, Jul 29: In a major turnaround, the Bangalore Police have announced that Mustafa, the skating instructor they had arrested for the rape of a six-year-old schoolgirl, is innocent.

The police have instead found “circumstantial evidence” against two gym instructors of the school and arrested them. They have been identified as Lal Giri, 21, and Vaseem Pasha, 22.

However, another case was registered against Mustafa late Monday evening for alleged sexual assault on a student at a school where he worked previously.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Tuesday, police commissioner MN Reddi said Mustafa had been a given a “clean chit” in the case involving the six-year-old.

He said the rape occurred on July 3 and not July 2 as believed earlier. “Mustafa was not around at the crime scene on July 3,” he said.

Reddi declined to comment on the claims made during the July 20 press conference called by the previous police commissioner, Raghavendra Auradkar, to announce Mustafa's arrest.

In that press conference, Auradkar had said child pornography was found on Mustafa's laptop and even suggested that he might be part of an international child porn racket.

A senior police officer who vehemently made such claims during Mustafa's arrest chose not to speak on record when confronted with the new revelations in the case.

“I still maintain that Mustafa is a pervert. There is still the other case against him from the previous school,” the officer who did not want to be named told HT.

Punching more holes in the investigation conducted under the supervision of his predecessor, Reddi said the child was not raped in a closed room as claimed earlier.

Relatives of Mustafa, meanwhile, were furious and jubilant in equal measure. His wife, Ayesha, told HT, “Allah has listened to our prayers and given us a beautiful blessing on Eid.”

She, however, said that irreparable damage had been done to her husband's reputation.

Asked about the other case registered against Mustafa, she said, “The police are claiming that he was dismissed from the previous school for misbehaving with children. But I know that he quit the previous job because his salary was very low. After what has happened, what credibility does the police have now?”

Blaming the media for blindly believing the police, another relative of Mustafa said, "One TV reporter came to our house on the night of the arrest posing as a policeman and took away a photograph of Mustafa. Less than an hour later, the TV channel started flashing the photograph. Next morning, most newspapers and channels carried the photograph.”

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.
