
The youth has been identified as Praveen Kulal (20), from Kadeshwalya village.
Three others who had accompanied Praveen into the river, Kiran Amtoor, Ajay Honnavar and Kamalaksha, luckily escaped from danger.
It is learnt that Praveen had been on a visit to Sajipa-munnur to visit his friend Harish's residence for wedding on Saturday. Once the wedding convoy left to Kateel for the wedding ceremony, Praveen stepped into the river along with Kiran, Ajay, Vijay and Kamalaksha to bathe.
Unfortunately, due to the swift current of the river, Praveen was swept away. Although Kamalaksha tried to rescue him, he was unsuccessful in his attempt.
Kamalaksha was taken ill due to the strong current of water and was later taken to a hospital.
Even as locals and fire department personnel launched a search operation, the body of Praveen could not be traced.
Praveen had been working as a welder in Mangalore city. He was the elder of the two brothers in his family.
Kiran, Ajay and Kamalaksha received treatment at a hospital.
Late arrival of police personnel
Although the incident took place at 8 a.m. in the morning, the police arrived at the scene only at 1 p.m. in the noon. Whereas, the search operation by fire department personnel begun at 9.30 a.m. itself.
Search operation by the locals continued till evening.
