Bantwal, Jun 23: Intensifying its fight against the arrest of three youth in connection with the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Rajesh Poojary, the district unit of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a demonstration in front of the house of district in-charge minister B Ramanatha Rai on June 23.

A rally was carried out from Kalpane to the premises of minister's house in Kallige village in Bantwal taluk at 10am.

Police who were present in the large number during the protest prevented the agitators, including the family members of the three arrested, from moving towards Mr Rai 's residence. The proterstors raised the slogans against Ramanatha Rai, Mangalore North MLA Moideen Bawa and Circle Inspector Lingappa Poojary.

Addressing the protestors, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla demanded release of the innocent youth and a re-investigation in the murder case.

Squarely blaming state government for the failure of law and order in the district, Mr Katipall lamented it was shame that the people have to fight for the cause of humanity.

Demanding a CID inquiry into the Poojary murder case, Mr Katipalla warned that the protest will be taken to Bangalore if the demands are not met.

The arrested Hussain, Imran and Irshad are bread-winners in their families and strive hard to earn a livelihood. However, with mounting pressure on the police department by saffron organisations to nab the culprits in the murder case of the Bajrang Dal activist, the police officials in charge of the case Rajashekhar Maistry and Lingappa Poojary have arrested the three innocent youth although the accused bear no grudge against the victim or have links with any organisations. The accused have no criminal background either, he said.

DYFI members had held a day and night protest near deputy commissioner's office here from June 4 to 5 for the same cause.

Poojary, an auto rickshaw driver was murdered at Kalpane of Kallige village in Bantwal on March 21. Bantwal town police had arrested Irshad (21), Imran (20) and Hussain (20), residents of Mullur village, in connection with the incident.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
