Mangaluru, Jan 2: Former president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Rahim Uchil alleged that the Academy, which had been set up to promote the culture of Beary language, had become a puppet in the hands of the present state government.

With the appointment of a new president after the Congress party came to power in Karnataka, the academy has become a puppet of the state administration. The president and members of the academy seem to be dancing to the tunes of Congress leaders, fearing their removal from the committee running the academy. In a way, political representatives from the Congress party are œblackmailing the academy members to nominate their chosen individuals as recipients of Academy awards, he alleged.
He said that the incumbent president of the state Beary Sahitya Academy was less favourable to ventures such as the establishment of a Beary research centre at Mangaluru University and the establishment of a Beary Bhavan for cultural programmes. œDuring my tenure, it was proposed to hold the world Global Beary convention in Mysuru but no further efforts have been taken in this regard, he said, adding that Academy awards were currently being given based on favouritism instead of their achievements to Beary language and culture.
He said that setting such a criteria for nomination of Academy award winners was wrong and immoral and the government should not get involved in literary and cultural affairs.
Mr Uchil also condemned the larger presence of Congress politicians in programmes conducted by the cultural Academy. However, he clarified that he had no personal hatred towards the Academy president or its members.
