Mangalore, Jun 13: Members of South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation, affiliated to AITUC, staged a demonstration in front of the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner at Bendoorwell here on Friday, demanding immediate payment of higher dearness allowance to beedi workers which is being delayed by owners of beedi companies.
Close to a hundred beedi workers participated in the demonstration in Bendoorwell demanding their dearness allowance from the month of April.
According to a directive issued by the Labour Bureau, the consumer price index for industrial workers has gone up by 705 for the current financial year 2014-15 and beedi workers should 3 paise for every point or Rs 21.15 from April 1. But the payment has been delayed for beedi workers.
AITCU leaders P Sanjeeva, V Seetaram Berinja and H V Rai spoke in the demonstration addressing the beedi workers.
Activists Suresh Kumar, M Karunakar, Sulochana, Shivappa Kotian, Chitrakshi, Saraswati and several others participated in the demonstration.
Prior to the demonstration, the group of beedi workers assembled at the ground near Shanti Nilaya, Balmatta and marched towards the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner at Bendoorwell.
Following the demonstration, the beedi workers submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Labour Commissioner stating their demands.
