Mangaluru, Mar 8: Congress corporators K Bhaskar Moily and Muhammad Kunjathabail have been elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation on Thursday.
Mysuru regional commissioner Shivayogi C Kalasad conducted the election to the mayor's post at MCC Council hall. Members to different standing committees were elected unopposed.
Mr. Moily and Mr. Kunjathabail got 37 votes each while BJP’s Surendra Shetty and Meera Karkera contesting for Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively got 19 votes each.
Moily, who represents ward number 36, is a senior Congress leader with nearly 33 years of experience as a politician. He had also served as a standing committee chairman of the MCC Council.
K Mohammed from the Congress, who represents ward number 15, was in fact an aspirant for mayor post. However, the ruling party had decided to field him for deputy mayor post considering the seniority of Moily.
While the Council has 60 elected corporators, Congress has the strength of 35 elected representatives, BJP has 20. While JD(S) has two corporators in the council, SDPI has one representative and an independent candidate. In addition, two MLAs representing Mangaluru City South, Mangaluru City North, two MLCs and an MP too have the right to vote.
