Udupi, Aug 24: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which has began investigations into businessman Bhaskar Shetty murder case, succeeded in getting custody of two of the five accused while three main accused were sent back to judicial custody on Wednesday.
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate extended the judicial custody of the main accused – Bhaskar Shetty's wife Rajeshwari Shetty, their son Navneet Shetty and priest Niranjan Bhat till September 6. Niranjan's father Srinivas Bhat and Niranjan's car driver Raghavendra were in judicial custody since August 11, were remanded to CID custody till August 29.
The court also granted permission for taking blood samples of Bhaskar Shetty's mother and brother for DNA profiling.
According to sources, H.C. Kishore Chandra, Director General of Police, CID, Pratap Reddy, Additional Director General of Police, CID, Sonia Narang, DIG, were involved in the investigation of the case.
Mr Reddy said that the CID team was stationed here since August 18. “We are probing the case from all angles,” he said and refused to comment on the handling of the case by the local police.
52-year-old Bhaskar Shetty, who owned business establishments in Saudi Arabia and Udupi, went missing from his house here on July 28 and his mother Gulabi Shetty lodged a missing complaint at the Manipal police station on July 29.
The police arrested Rajeshwari (46) and Navneet (24) on the charge of murdering Shetty and destroying evidence, here on August 7. They arrested the priest Niranjan Bhat (25) on August 8 for allegedly helping in disposing off Bhaskar Shetty's body after burning in it in a Yagna Kunda' room at Nandalike village and immersing the ashes in a rivulet at Palli village.
So far, the police have not recovered the dead body of Bhaskar Shetty. The police arrested two more accused – Srinivas Bhat, father of Niranjan Bhat, and Raghavendra, Niranjan's car driver, on August 10 on the charge of destruction of evidence in the case.
