Mangalore, Jan 11: Members of the BJP held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Friday accusing their Congress counterparts of playing 'vote bank politics' over Swami Vivekananada.
Speaking on the occasion, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, MLC said that by boycotting the programme held at Ramakrishna Mission premises in the city organized by the district administration, the Congress party has continued to play 'division' politics.
“Swami Vivekananda spoke about a unified India. The Congress has in the last 65 years always divided people on the basis of minorities, caste and other factors. By staying away from the programme on Swami Vivekananda, they have continued their policy of division. They are scared that participating in this programme would mean damage to their vote bank”, Mr. Karnik said.
The MLC criticized the Congress for citing RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat's participation in the programme as an excuse to stay away.
“It is an attempt by the Congress to please a section of people. In spite of obtaining an MBBS degree and serving as a doctor, he (Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat) chose to serve the society and cure social illnesses. He has created hundreds of dedicated patriots and activists”, Mr. Karnik said.
Franklyn Monteiro, President, BJP Minority Wing, said that it is because of the Sangh Parivar that minorities are safe in India and not under the Congress. Minorities are suffering in states where Congress is ruling, he said.
BJP leaders Padmanabha Kottary and Shrikar Prabhu were present besides others.
Congress MLAs in Dakshina Kannada stayed away from the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda organized under the joint auspices of District administration and Ramkrishna Mutt in protest against decision to ask RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat to inaugurate the same.
