Kumbla, Feb 26: Two policemen, including Kumbla sub-inspector J.K. Jayasanker, were injured after a mob attacked a police team at Bambrana, near Kumbla in Kasaragod, in the weekend.
The attack started after the police burst tear-gas and lobbed a smoke grenade to disperse a group of warring members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party at Bambrana around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday.
The clash began when the decorations, flags, and posters put up in connection with the district conference of the pro-BJP Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) were found vandalised. The BMS said the miscreants belonged to the DYFI, which refuted the charge.
The rival groups attacked scores of people, leading to the hospitalisation of a DYFI worker and four BJP loyalists.
As a team of police led by Mr. Jayasankar urged the mob to disperse, they threw stones and bottles that injured the two policemen, around 8 p.m.
A police vehicle and an autorickshaw were damaged, Mr. Jayasankar said.
The police have registered cases under IPC Sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty), and 453 (trespass).
Indian Union Muslim League activists accused the police of initiating unilateral action against the members of a particular community in a bid to add a communal colour to the clash.
